Get to know CBD and its history

The long tradition of cannabis and CBD in medicine

Cannabis has been used medically for thousands of years, for example in ancient China, Egypt and Greece, to relieve inflammation and pain. At the beginning of the 20th century, global measures to curb drug use led to increasing regulation against cannabis use in medicine. This also led to a restriction of research efforts for therapeutic purposes. However, the isolation of the active substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and in the early 1990s with the discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the human body, research on the medical properties of cannabis grew and became more intensive.

Milestone:

  • 1800s– An Irish physician publishes one of the earliest modern scientific papers supporting the medical use of cannabis.

  • 1930s- Cannabis is increasingly regulated in the U.S. under Narcotics Commissioner, leading to a global restriction on medical cannabis.

  • 1940s- American chemist successfully isolates the active ingredient CBD. We’re currently use mostly of his studios to extract the active ingredient.

  • 1960s- Israeli chemist successfully isolates the active ingredient THC.

  • 1990s- Discovery of the endocannabinoid system in the brain, leading to continued research into medical benefits of cannabis

  • 2010s CBD flowers with a low percentage of THC start to become legal across Europe.
